About the Author of The Born A Crime PDF

Trevor Noah

The Mountain is You PDF Summary

Trevor Noah’s childhood in his native South Africa during the apartheid era is described in the book.

In accordance with the apartheid system of racial classification, Noah was labeled as “colored” since he is the mixed-race son of a white Swiss-German father and a black Xhosa mother.

Even under apartheid, according to Noah, he experienced social isolation because it was illegal “for [him] to be born as a mixed-race infant,” hence the title of his book.

The novel is largely an homage to Patricia Nombuyiselo, Noah’s mother, who was raised in a hut with 14 other people.

According to Noah, his mother is obstinate, courageous, and a superb teacher.

Despite the fact that black South Africans were rioting in the streets and the majority of people were hiding in their houses,

she was a deeply pious mother who took her son to three churches every Sunday, a prayer group on Tuesday, a Bible study on Wednesday, and youth church on Thursday.

At the beginning of the novel, little Noah is pushed out of a minibus by his mother because she fears that the driver, a member of a different South African tribe, will kill them.

By using his language proficiency to overcome the barrier to his acceptance as a youngster of mixed race, Noah develops social and mental agility.

Growing up in need, he gains independence by selling pirated CDs, first at school and then on the streets of the infamous Alexandra district.

Noah talks about how difficult it was to coexist with his controlling stepfather Abel.

Throughout it all, his mother has been disciplining him with “old-school, Old Testament punishment” and severe love.

When Noah is stopped for driving an unregistered car that was illegally taken from Abel’s workshop, he expresses his concern about going to jail, and his mother sets the rules for crime and punishment.

The book concludes with the miraculous survival of Noah’s mother, who was shot in the head by his violent stepfather as she and her family were coming from church.
