The Glass Castle PDF Summary

The Glass Castle pdf is Jeannette Walls’ memoir about her childhood and adolescence, detailing how her parents both inspired and hindered her life. The story is divided into five parts. The first section, “A Woman On the Street,” records her interaction with her mother, Rose Mary, who was squatting in an abandoned apartment in New York City at the time, which compelled her to speak the truth and write this memoir.

Part Two, “The Desert,” follows young Jeannette Walls as she grows up with her parents, Rex and Rose Mary, and siblings Lori, Brian, and Maureen. Walls begins with her first recollection when she is three years old and lived in a trailer park in southern Arizona.

When she tries to make hot dogs over the stove, she is enveloped in flames, forcing her to travel to the hospital and needs skin grafts on her stomach, ribs, and chest.

Rex pulls Jeannette out of the hospital without permission or payment due to his dread of growing medical expenditures and distrust of contemporary medicine.

After a few months, the youngsters are awakened in the middle of the night and informed that they are “doing the skedaddle” (skipping town).

The family regularly moves between Nevada, Arizona, and California due to their parents’ restless lifestyle necessitated by their avoidance of financial duties.

Jeannette becomes more conscious of Rex’s drunkenness and its implications as she gets older.

For her tenth birthday, she requests that he refrain from drinking, which he does for a few months.

Rose Mary decides that because they don’t have any money, it’s time to relocate again, and she takes the family to their paternal grandparents in Welch, West Virginia.

The Glass Castle PDF Controversy

The Glass Castle pdf has also faced public scrutiny, most notably in high school English classes.

The Glass Castle pdf was the seventeenth most banned and challenged book in the United States between 2010 and 2019, and the ninth most challenged book in 2012.

The book has been questioned because of its foul language and sexual content.

West Senior High School’s 9th grade honors English class in Traverse City, Michigan, banned the novel in 2012 owing to its “explicit language and references to child abuse,

adolescent sexual exploits, and violence.” After the school board reconsideration committee voted to keep the book, it was reinstated to the curricula.

In 2017, the book was challenged again in Marshfield, Wisconsin, and the National Coalition Against Censorship defended it,

claiming that confronting its topics of “poor, hunger, bullying, assault, and drunkenness” will help the children.

On March 1, 2017, the review committee unanimously voted to keep the book in the sophomore English curriculum.
