The Kite Runner PDF Summary
Amir, a well-to-do Pashtun youngster, and Hassan, the son of Ali, Amir’s father’s servant, spend their days kite fighting in Kabul, a formerly calm city.
Flying kites was a way for the two youngsters to escape their horrible surroundings. Hassan is an excellent “kite runner” for Amir; he can predict where the kite will land without even looking at it.
Amir’s mother died during childbirth, whereas Hassan’s mother, Sanaubar, just abandoned him and Ali.
Amir’s father, a wealthy trader known lovingly as Baba, adores both boys.
To Amir’s chagrin, he makes a point of purchasing identical items for Hassan. He even pays for surgery to fix Hassan’s cleft lip.

Baba, on the other hand, is frequently critical of Amir, viewing him as weak and lacking in confidence, and even threatening to physically punish him when he complains about Hassan.
Amir finds a warmer fatherly figure in Rahim Khan, Baba’s best friend, who understands and supports Amir’s passion for writing, something Baba believes is only for women.
In a rare instance when Amir is allowed to sit on Baba’s lap rather than being pushed away as a nuisance, he inquires as to why his father consumes wine, which is prohibited by Islam.
Baba informs him that the Mullahs are hypocrites and that the only true sin is thievery, which can take various forms, the worst of which is having an affair.
